Season opener hits big at Belushi Pisano Gallery
June 2007
The second annual group show opened on June 7 at the Belushi Pisano Gallery on
Martha’s Vineyard and is, according to art critic Tamar Russell, an impressive
presentation of "... eclectic variety ... featuring more than a dozen artists ... bronze,
glass, lamps, jewelry, painting, photography and mixed media."
"I love these pieces. They are pieces I could live with", said gallery coordinator
Kali Wingood. Among the pieces she described were the peaceful mixed media abstracts
by Jennifer J.L. Jones ... And the true moment of peace was when Ms. Wingood showed
me the stash of small Jennifer J.L. Jones mixed media pieces in the office - enchanting."
The group show runs through June 14. Then, on July 27, Jennifer’s work will again
be featured in a two-artist show at the gallery.
See the
Exhibitions page.

Critic acclaims Jennifer's new Intrinsic Nature Series
March 2007
Donald Dusinberre, art critic for EU Jacksonville, had this to say regarding
Jennifer's Intrinsic Nature Series now on display at Stellers Gallery Annex:
While I consider myself a focused person while I'm looking at art, I cannot
say the same for myself when I'm looking for art. Apparently, the Stellers Gallery
has four locations, and it took me a couple of tries to find the right one. There's
one in Ponte Vedra, Neptune Beach, San Marco, and Julington Creek. Nevertheless,
I successfully found the Stellers Gallery Annex in Neptune Beach, currently displaying
the work of Jennifer J.L. Jones, an artist living in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jones' mixed-media work is rooted in nature, though not completely representational
like the work of a landscape artist. Each piece in her Intrinsic Nature series is a
sophisticated example of texture and aura. She smoothly incorporates a variety of materials,
including paints, wax, paper, charcoal, glue, and metal. Despite using such seemingly
incongruous materials, Jones exhibits a masterful ability to integrate them and construct
a uniquely cohesive visual plane. Lightly sheeted within many layers of paint is a single
background color, washing in and out of view. Floating gently above the background are
branches, leaves, and petals that stand as sharp flecks of contrast to the mist of color
behind them. From a short distance away, some of the paintings may resemble photos of a
deep space nebula or the bottom of a shallow pond.
Upon examination, Jones' paintings imposed upon me a strange effect. Those countless
intermingling layers and floating petals caused me to lose the thoughts I intended to think,
and drew me into vague impressions from which I could not escape. Jones herself alludes to
this effect in her bio: "The colors I choose to glaze over one another create mood, atmosphere,
and a 'vibration' of energy unique to each viewer interacting with the final piece."
Perhaps that sounds a bit fruity to some of you, and for the most part, I don't generally
acknowledge any sense of "energy" or "aura". Many of the concepts of Feng Shui are a load of crap,
and people who say they see auras around others are desperate for attention or admiration. In
other words, your own perception is the only thing you can believe. But that doesn't mean that
the energy vibrations and auras don't exist. They are simply coming from the viewer, not the
painting, and that's why they can be different for each person.
Jones' paintings are successful because they can bring about just such an interaction.
It's a delightful thing to become lost in the fog of a painting, and the Stellers Gallery
Annex is full of them. The Annex is comfortable and not at all intimidating, so head out to
the beach this week and take a few moments to view this artist's work.
The Stellers Gallery Annex is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., as well as
Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Learn more about the Stellers Gallery by visiting

Jennifer’s Five Elements selected as added inspiration of building’s design
January 2007
Construction is underway for 44 Monroe, a $70 million, 523,619-square-foot
residential high-rise building in Phoenix, Ariz. When complete, the 33-story
tower will be Arizona’s tallest residential structure. San Diego-based Tucker
Sadler Architects is providing full architectural services and interior design
services for the tower’s community areas. The project is scheduled for completion
in early 2008.
The exterior and interior incorporates the five Chinese elements of nature
- earth, wood, water, metal, and fire. As an added source of inspiration, the
architect selected Five Elements, a painting by Jennifer J. L. Jones. The
clean lines and color palette found in the painting serve as the project’s
interior design guide. The linear elements, along with a color palette
reflective of the painting and brilliant Arizona sunsets, form a cohesive
design throughout the tower.

From FOCUS/Santa Fe, June/July 2006 Issue,
By Jo Ann Baldinger
May 2006
Jennifer J. L. Jones paintings are featured in a solo
exhibition at Hunter-Kirkland Contemporary Gallery,
May 26 - June 18.
Jennifer J. L. Jones’s paintings dance a fine line between the
abstract and the recognizable. Tiny white birds seem to tumble out of
a fiery sunset, stars explode against a dark sky, a forest lake
emerges out of the mist and then, as we gaze, disappears back
into it.
These mixed media works, all done on wood panel, and ranging in
size from 10 inches square to greater than 6 by 8 feet, enchant the
viewer with their shape-shifting qualities. Jones accomplishes the
unusual feat of presenting a subtle, feminine sensibility with
passion, energy, and imagination.
"Making art is the only thing in my life that I never questioned,"
the artist said in a recent phone interview from her home in Atlanta.
"I always felt, ‘I can do this.’ "
At the young age of 34, Jones has accumulated some impressive
credentials, including annual exhibitions in galleries from Los
Angeles to Santa Fe to Chicago, and from Martha’s Vineyard to Lisbon,
Portugal. Her work is owned by numerous international corporations,
while the list of her private collectors includes Oprah Winfrey.
In any particular painting, Jones may use oils, acrylics, glue,
charcoal, wax, metal, and textured paper to build a multilayered
surface that reveals its secrets over time. "Often collectors are
attracted first to the colors," she observed. "Later - sometimes even
after a year living with the painting on their wall - they’ll write
to me and say, ‘I just noticed something I’d never seen before!’ "
Jones switched from canvas to wood panels about six years ago,
initially because traditional canvas was not strong enough to support
all the media she was using. "Then I started getting influenced by
the wood itself, the feel of it, the way the paintbrush moves over
it, the way I can glue textures onto it. I also started leaving part
of the wood grain revealed. Now," she said, "the wood sometimes
dictates the entire painting."
Jones credits her rural upbringing in Virginia and Florida with
her reliance on the natural world as an inspiration for her art.
"Nature and light are important to me. One thing I like about Atlanta
is that there are so many parks and trees, and we have gorgeous
sunsets here as well."
After earning her BFA from the prestigious School of the Art
Institute of Chicago in 1994, Jones recalled, "I was so burned out
that it took me about two years to really start developing my own
style, my own way of painting." She will not disclose the specifics
of her techniques, but describes her process as intuitive rather
than pre-planned. "I may bring an idea or a feeling into the studio.
Then, as I’m working, the images start revealing themselves through
the paint."
Last year Jones was one of four artists featured in a
UCLA-sponsored exhibition and lecture series titled Healing and
Transformation through Art, which explored the ways the creative
arts can unleash personal insight and enhance health. This honor
points to another essential source of Jones’s art: her ongoing
meditation practice. "Spirituality is about energy," she explained.
"The energy you put into a painting is what viewers will pick up
and respond to."
